Gibson was an established portrait painter by 1711 when he was appointed a founding director of Kneller’s Academy in London.  His sitters included a number of important public figures and his most constant patron was the 1st Earl Poulett who commissioned a great number of originals and copies.  A larger version of this portrait, by Gibson, resides in the Bodleian Library at Oxford
