He was born in Southport and trained at Warrington School of Art, the Slade, and at Newlyn School of Art under Stanhope Forbes. Hayward served in the Royal Field Artillery in the First World War. He settled in St Ives in Cornwall in about 1923 and founded a painting school and gallery at Shore Studio.
He exhibited between 1920-40 at the Royal Academy & Royal Institute of Painters in Oil.
This honeymoon portrait of his wife was painted in June 1912 at Montreuil sur Mer. Cicely had been James Bolivar Manson’s secretary prior to her marriage and she later left Hayward to live with Manson. Hayward’s initial stoicism about the separation became more embittered and he omitted any mention of Cicely from his 1942 entry in Who’s Who.
Provenance: The artist’s estate; Irving Grose.
Exhibited: St Ives, Belgrave Gallery, 1975, Centenary Exhibition: Alfred Hayward
Signed and inscribed on the backboard, oil on canvas.
