Born Paisley, Nov; died March 9. Painter in oil, watercolour, chalk and wash of portraits, still life, landscapes (usually in Brittany); also sculptor in plaster and terracotta. Studied at Glasgow School of Art under David Donaldson and Benno Schotz, the latter having encouraged him to become a portrait painter. Postgraduate scholarship enabled him to pay regular visits to Brittany to where he returned every year for three decades. His portraiture is in the Lavery tradition. His work has the same easy appearance as that of Cadell and in its bravura of handling is reminiscent of the Glasgow School. Regarded as a very professional painter. The first major exhibition of hi Brittany paintings was held in Edinburgh 1966, leading to a commission to decorate the flagship of the Brittany Ferries fleet, Bretagne, in 1967. Goudie completed a series of works illustrating Tam O'Shanter in 1966. These paintings, together with 54 subsequently exhibited in Edinburgh, were purchased for Rozelle House, Alloway, where they remain on permanent display. Elected member, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, in 970. Awarded the Newbery Medal in 1955. Collaborated with David Donaldson on a mural depicting the departure for France of Mary Queen of Scots. Began exhibiting RSA in 1951 and Glasgow Institute (78) 1954-1987, from Arnewood House, 4 Clevedon Road. A retrospective exhibition was held at the Fine Art Society in 1983. Represented in Glasgow City Collection, Royal Collection, Paisley AG, Greenock AG, Lillie AG (Milngavie), Perth AG.
