Born Glasgow 19 September; died Glasgow 6 January. Landscape painter in oil and watercolour. Educated at the Normal School and Glasgow University. Apart from a short spell of tutelage under a student of Corot's, he was self taught. As a youth he made a careful study of many great paintings, especially those in Glasgow Art Gallery. Entered his father's business but abandoned this shortly afterwards in order to paint full time. In his unaided study Gibson revealed an affinity for the work of the great Dutch painters and for the Barbizon School, particularly Corot. Served in the Boer War with the 6th Battalion Scottish Imperial Yeomanry. His first exhibits were an oil and a watercolour at the Glasgow Institute in 1888. Throughout his life he was a keen member of the Glasgow Art Club. His paintings were characterised by great technical skill and subtle use of colour harmonies. His continental scenes were presented with sensitive and intimate charm incorporating delightful woodland landscapes and quiet waterways rich in poetic appeal. Also painted in France and England being particularly fond of Herefordshire and Gloucestershire, especially the Forest of Dean; in later life the landscape of Suffolk also inspired him. In 1902 was associated with the Glasgow artist and physician Alexander Frew in establishing the short-lived breakaway group Glasgow Society of Artists. At their first exhibition most of the works were by him, Frew and Bessie MacNicol. In the last two or three years of his life he painted increasingly on the west coast of Scotland, usually in Morar. He found expression mainly in low-toned harmonies ranging through grays, greens, silver whites and cool browns and although reserving these characteristics, in his later years he painted in a higher key. warm hearted and frank he had great charm, being popular among a wide circle of friends. Exhibited at the Royal Academy (3), at the Royal Scottish Academy, Glasgow Institute (106), Aberdeen Artists' Society 1906-1929 and London (27). Represented in Aberdeen AG, Glasgow AG, Greenock AG, Paisley AG, Hull AG, Bradford AG and Oldham AG.
