Born Aberdeen. Landscape painter in oil but mainly watercolour, also pastel and black and white. Often painted upper Deeside and in Picardy. Studied Aberdeen Art School, in London and Paris, at the Academie Julian under Bouguereau. Lived and worked most of his life in Aberdeen and was a foundation member of the Aberdeen Art Society (AAS) in 1885. Painted powerful watercolours with broad skies and expansive views across fields and moorland, with more interest in mood than detail. One of his favourite sketching areas was Glen Gairn, upper Deeside, in the company of his friend and local resident Rodolphe Christen.
Elected RSW 1893. Exhibited RA (4) 1877-1891, RSA (24) including 'On the Gairn near Ballater' (1875), RSW (28), RI (1), RBA (1), GI (22) and AAS 1886-1924, after 1905 from 119 Broomhill Ave.
