Born Kyle of Lochalsh, Wester Ross. Popular but under-rated painter of landscape, somewhat in the manner of Mackintosh Patrick. His subjects are most often the north-west Highlands and the Moray Firth, especially around its northern shores near his home. Trained at Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen 1949-53, wining an Academy award 1954. Became interested in golf courses and designed a series of links views published as prints. Received many commissions to paint golfing scenes at St Andrews and Carnoustie, later produced as prints. From 1990 his style changed from detailed representational to a broader brush, using sharp contrasts to intensify dramatic appeal. Exhibited regularly at the RSA, GI and AAS 1959-19664 from his home in Invergordon.
