Aberdeen painter in oil and watercolour; landscape, mainly local. Specialised in Aberdeenshire and Perthshire scenes, often with rivers or the sea in ivory tones. In his early years he exhibited from the home of James Winkley whose protégé he was. Founder member of the Aberdeen Society of Artists in 1885. His work was competent if a little nondescript. Earned the reputation of being difficult. His later work is looser, lighter and less interesting. Among the 18 works exhibited at the RSA 1874-95 was 'Evening at Braemar' (1879), also Glasgow Institute (6) and regularly at the Aberdeen Society of Artists 1885-1929.
