Born Lossiemouth 1868; died Lossiemouth, October 8 1936. Painter in oil and watercolour; landscape and marines. Son of a ship's captain, in his youth he went to sea and when he was 32 participated in the Klondyke gold rush, but returned to Lossiemouth where he remained for the rest of his life, apart from a short visit to South America in the 1920s. Highly regarded in his native Moray Firth area for his excellent portrayal of the characteristic light of the North Sea in that part of the world. Most of his work has a low skyline giving wide range for the depiction of the interplay of water and sky whilst the fishing towns and villages of the Firth coastline are painted accurately and without affectation. Favoured by copyists, care is required over attribution. Elected RSW 1908 and later Vice-President. His work was shown on the Continent and in Buenos Aires where a one-man exhibition was held in 1927. 
Exhibited RA (9) 1890-1902 from various addresses in Aberdeen and after 1902 from Lossiemouth; also RSA (94), RSW (97), RHA (3), RI (2), AAS (1897-1935) and GI (25). Lived at Chilkoot, Lossiemouth. Represented in Aberdeen AG, Haddo House (NTS).
