Gregory narrowly escaped becoming a marine engineer, like his father and grandfather, and with his art-school friend Hubert Herkomer, left Southampton for the South Kensington Schools. He became a very successful painter, particularly for subjects of the upper classes at leisure, his most famous painting being Boulter's Lock, a crowded boating scene.
