Little is known of this fine 18th century portraitist who we know worked between 1737 and 1755. He most likely hails from Wales and spent some of his artistic life in London. Most of his work goes unattributed as he signed very little and his style is not easily recognizable, but the quality of his known work is exemplary.
The sitter is the Reverend Hugh Lloyd who lived in Mold in the 18th century and who died around in September 1749. He was a cleric in the town, related to the Wynne family of Leeswood and also to the painter Richard Wilson.
