Born Skene, Aberdeenshire; died Aberdeen, 1 November. Flower painter, illustrator, botanical author and gardener. Mother of Elspeth Haston. Trained Gray’s School of Art. One of the most remarkable, modest and highly regarded botanical artists Scotland has produced, she continued to paint into her 101st year when she was Britain’s oldest working artist, with an emphasis on accurate physical attractiveness, rather than botanical analysis. For over 40 years she ran a nursery of alpines and garden flowers at the Manse of Skene until the death of her husband in 1949,then at Springbank Lodge, Aberdeen and finally at Balbithan House, Kintore, purchased in 1959. Collected and painted wild flowers in Kenya, Scotland and the Algarve. Member, Society of Botanical Artists. Publications include Wild Flowers of Scotland, Wild Flowers of the Algarve (4 vols 1981-1994), Scots Roses 1998 and Old Pinks was published posthumously in 2004. Exhibitions of her work have been held in France, at the RHS London, Portugal, Scotland and Kenya.
