Elected RSW in 1987, Pat Semple was born in 1939 in Kintyre on the West Coast of Scotland. She studied art at Edinburgh College of Art. Her tutor was Derek Clarke who later became her husband. As well as depicting the landscapes and seascapes of the Highlands and its many islands in a strong, bold and colourful style, Pat says that her paintings are an attempt to explore the relationships between the human figure and the landscape. Her pictures are multi-layered, each layer containing its own personal and universal symbolisms – an allegory, she says, of both her spiritual and personal lives. Her work is included in the collection of the Scottish Arts Council and many private collections worldwide. Pat has exhibited extensively, both in solo and group shows, and her work is held by many of the country’s most prestigious institutions, companies and galleries.
