Born in Dumfries. Britain’s foremost wildlife artist. Although he occasionally painted in oil, he is most highly regarded for his watercolours. Studied at the St Johns Wood School of Art in London whose principal at the time was the animal painter Calderon. Remained in London for some years becoming an extremely popular illustrator and painter of birds. The first of the great wildlife painters whose works were photographically reproduced – more prints have been produced of his work than of any other wildlife artist. His compositions are minutely detailed and remarkable accurate.
