Born Crieff, Dec 17; died Edinburgh, Oct 16. Painter of animals and birds in oil and watercolour. Educated Morrison’s Academy, Crieff and Edinburgh School of Art, where he received a Carnegie Travelling Scholarship in the RSA Life Classes enabling him to journey to Paris where he undertook further studies at the Academie Julian. Returned to Edinburgh and to his favourite subjects, animals and birds in their natural settings. Whilst abroad he worked in zoos and on his return was appointed a member of staff, Edinburgh College of Art , where he taught animal drawing and painting for eleven years. Serious eye trouble prevented him doing any painting for five years but partial recovery then enabled him to resume his work at a reduced level. Author and illustrator of Animals We Know. Had many interests outside art and natural history, including rugby football, alpine gardening, collecting and identifying Scottish provincial silver. Exhibited RSA (100+), RSW (73), RA (3), GI (50+). Represented in Aberdeen AG, Paisley AG, Perth AG and Edinburgh City Collection.
