Born Aberdeen, 14 December 1917. Painter in oil, watercolour, gouache and tempera. Trained at Gray’s School of Art 1932-1938. Also trained in France, Italy and Switzerland 1939. Won Guthrie Award 1943.
Head of the School of Painting, Dundee College of Art 1950-1983. Awarded San Vito Prize (Rome) 1959, Hon. LLD (Aberdeen) 1980 and OBE 1993.
A successful portrait painter as well as landscapes, still-lifes and genre. Among his more important commissions are portraits of ‘The Queen Mother’, ‘President of Iceland’ and ‘The Earl of Mar & Kellie’.
Exhibited regularly at Royal Scottish Academy. Represented in Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Aberdeen Art Gallery and Glasgow Art Gallery, to name but a few.
